SD Mines Offers Students Wide Array of Welcome Activities
RAPID CITY, SD – Classes at South Dakota School of Mines & Technology begin on Monday, Aug. 20, which means students will be taking advantage of countless events and activities in the coming weeks.
“We are excited about the new academic year and want to welcome our new and returning students back with a bang,” says SD Mines President Jim Rankin. “From the President’s Picnic to various entertainment events, we do our very best to make our Hardrockers feel welcome and at home.”
Welcome Back Hardrockers!
Thursday, Aug. 16, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.– New student move-in day. New Hardrocker students will move into the freshman residence halls on campus.
Thursday, Aug. 16, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. – Hardrocker Night at Main Street Square is a free event, during which SD Mines faculty and students will host activities such as gold panning, liquid nitrogen root beer floats, mine rescues, robotics demos, and a variety of student-designed vehicles will be displayed. Scholar-athletes will also interact with families and distribute game schedules. The South Dakota School of Mines, Alumni Association will have a gathering area for alumni to connect.
Friday, Aug. 17, 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. – Comedian Fumi Abe will perform in the Surbeck Center Ballroom. This event is for SD Mines students only.
Saturday, Aug. 18, 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. – Recreation Night at the King Center and Rowdy Rocker BBQ will be a great time with free food, inflatable bouncy houses, archery tag, go karts and laser tag. This event is for SD Mines students only.
Sunday August 19 – Freshmen Day of Service includes incoming freshmen who participate in a variety of community service projects as part of new student orientation every fall semester.
Sunday, Aug. 19, 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. – Welcome Week begins. Mentalist Christopher Carter will perform, in the Surbeck Center Ballroom. This event is for students only.
Monday, Aug. 20 – Classes begin. Game Show Night from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., in the Surbeck Center Ballroom.
Tuesday, Aug. 21, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. - ROTC New Cadet Orientation, in the Classroom Building, Room 117. Cadets will be introduced to ROTC leadership, receive clothing and supplies, and receive their Cadet Oath by the professor of Military Science. Cadets will also practice drill and ceremony.
Tuesday, Aug. 21, 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. – Free bowling for SD Mines students at Robbinsdale Lanes.
Wednesday, Aug. 22, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. – President’s Picnic will welcome students, faculty and staff with free BBQ, in the Quad. The traditional beanie hats will be handed out. Free movie, “Black Panther,” from8 p.m. to 10 p.m., in the King Center.
Thursday, Aug. 23, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. – The Student Organization Fair will feature all of the many organizations available to students at SD Mines. It is held in the Quad on campus.
Friday Aug. 24- to Sunday, Aug. 26 – Adventure Weekend for students will include activities both on and off campus, from laser tag to camping to motorcycle tours.
